About Immunizations...
NEW Upcoming changes in immunizations for 2011/2012
The State of Nebraska
will require a second dose of varicella (chicken pox)
vaccine starting July 1, 2011 for ALL STUDENTS AGE 5 AND OLDER who have not had
chicken pox.
The varicella vaccine first became available in 1995. Prior
to 1995, about 4 million cases of chicken pox occurred annually in the
U.S. The number of cases continues to decline. In addition to protecting
vaccinated individuals, increased protection also occurs for those that are at
risk due to their inability to get the vaccine due to allergies or other
medical conditions. One dose of varicella vaccine, or
evidence of disease, has been required for school entry and 7th grade since
July of 2004. The Center for Disease Control reports that 15-20 children
out of every 100 were not protected against the disease with just one
dose. Vaccinated students may have had a “break
through” case of chicken pox which is usually a much milder form of the
disease.
To prepare for this
change in State Law, I will begin the process of notifying families of students
that have record of only one varicella vaccine date
and/or no record of having had the disease on file at the school.
·
If
you receive notification from your student’s school and your student has had
chickenpox disease or a second varicella vaccine,
please provide this information to the health office at your student’s school
as soon as possible.
·
If
you receive notification from your student’s school and your child has not had
chicken pox or a second varicella vaccine, please
contact your medical provider or Central Nebraska Community Services
Immunization Clinic at 1-800-736-7491 extension 131 to make an appointment for
a second varicella vaccine. Please notify the health
office of any vaccines that your student receives so that updates can be made
to his/her immunization record.
Beginning
the 2010-2011 School Year:
The State of Nebraska now requires 1 dose of Tdap
(must contain the pertussis booster)-this dose can be
received any time after 10 or 11 years of age depending on which brand of
vaccine is received for all students in the 7th grade. Learn more
and obtain forms at http://www.dhhs.ne.gov/immunization/school_i.htm
Sports/School Physicals
The
state of Nebraska has the following physical examination standards for students
enrolled in schools in Nebraska. Broken Bow Public Schools strongly
encourages all students to have the required physical examinations so that any health
concerns can be diagnosed and treated appropriately in order for students to do
their best in school. However, the law also states that
a parent or guardian can refuse a physical examination in which a Refusal of Physical Examination form
must be signed and turned in to the school.
PHYSICAL
EXAMINATION STANDARDS
A printed or
typewritten form signed by a licensed physician, physician assistant, or nurse
practitioner indicating that a physical examination was administered on a
specific date within the previous
six (6) month period on a specifically named individual shall
constitute sufficient evidence of a physical examination. by a qualified physician within six (6) months prior to the entrance of
a child into the beginner grade and the seventh grade. A physical exam is also
required in the case of a transfer from out of state to any other grade of
the local school. As a substitute for such evidence of a physical, an
objection in writing to a physicial examination of
such child signed and dated by a parent or guardian of such child may be
submitted to the local school.
REMINDER: You will not be able to practice or
participate in any sports until your physical examination is completed and
turned in to the school. The local clinics have asked that you please try
to get your school/sports physicals scheduled and completed prior to
August 1. Click on the link below to find contact information for the
local clinics.
